Avaya has announced its acquisition of Sipera, which will be fully integrated into the company. With this acquisition, Avaya will be able to accelerate its development of integrated, SIP-based security capabilities for both Unified Communications and contact center environments alike.Sipera now provides Avaya's UC portfolio with a set of enterprise-class SBC capabilities for SIP trunking, offering flexibility, value, and security. This, combined with Avaya Aura, can provide customers with secure VoIP, SIP trunks, video conferencing, cloud-based communications, and more. The solutions provided by Siperia can simplify management and administration of security policies and systems, thus lowering the total cost of ownership of UC and contact center environments."Sipera was on my panel of six SBC vendors at the recent IT EXPO in Austin," says David Yedwab of UCStrategies. "The entire enterprise SBC space (termed E-SBC) is becoming important and hot as enterprises recognize that E-SBCs are a critical component to fully and securely transform to an IP network and Unified Communications. Sipera’s specific thrust on securing multiple modes of communications is certainly of growing importance and certainly contributed to Avaya’s acquisition of Sipera. Owning an SBC asset is positive for Avaya. However, it may also raise questions about how its existing relationship with Acme Packet will."According to Jon Arnold, UCStrategies UC Expert: "Avaya's move here is another sign of consolidation in the SBC market. Sipera brings proven technology, and allows Avaya to have a more complete solution for enterprise customers. I'll be more interested in seeing how their relationship with Acme Packet evolves, but for now, let's focus on what this brings to the Avaya portfolio. One area to watch will be if this helps drive adoption of their tablets as part of Aura."For more information, visit www.avaya.com.
