Shaw Communications Launches BroadWorks-Powered UC Solution by Robbie Pleasant

Shaw Communications, Inc., a cable, Internet, network and business service provider in Western Canada, has launched a new unified communications solution, powered by BroadSoft’s BroadWorks and UC-One. This new solution, called SmartVoice, provides Shaw Business’ SMB customers with a solution that scales to their size, and provides cloud-based communications both in and out of the office.

SmartVoice leverages BroadSoft’s UC-One platform in order to provide a variety of UC services, including presence, IM, video calling, desktop sharing, and advanced voice features. By offering key UC tools on a single device from any location, Shaw Communications aims to enhance productivity for its customers in an increasingly mobile-focused environment.

At the recent Broadsoft Connections conference, Ron McKenzie, Senior VP of Shaw Business, told the audience: “We have been selling dial tone, but now it’s about making voice a productivity enhancer for our customers.” He noted that Shaw Communications has been educating its customers about how they can conduct business from anywhere by using a cloud service, which also requires no capital outlay.

BroadSoft’s UC-One platform is designed to extend business offerings beyond just hosted PBX and telephony, empowering employees to work and communicate from wherever they may be with whichever device they prefer.

"This is a nice win for BroadSoft, and extends their reach into the Canadian UC market,” states Jon Arnold, UC Expert for UCStrategies and Principal of J Arnold & Associates. “Along with Rogers, they now power UC offerings for Canada's two largest cable operators, and can now address the SMB space nation-wide. The SmartVoice service from Shaw Business further validates how MSOs have emerged as a viable alternative to incumbent carriers for businesses looking to migrate away from legacy telephony."

SmartVoice is currently available to Shaw business customers in Canada. For more information, visit and
